First Portrait
by Robert Mosci

"Robert Mosci was performing at the grand old Beekman Tower Hotel on Manhattan's East Side when I first heard him.
At the time, I was busy crafting a story for the Boston Globe about what was hot and happening in New York's nightlife. I instantly took to the sleek art deco lounge with its dazzling view as well as Robert's crooning and command of the baby grand.
His voice is crisp yet smooth and enhanced by a certain soulfulness. When I listen to Robert I hear elements of James Taylor and Mose Allison.
You'll hear that and more on "First Portrait", Robert's first release on CD and cassette.
First Portrait is a fresh, whimsical collection of popular classic and standard tunes and original selections. This release is also a skillful fusion of both popular and jazz sounds. My guess is this stems from Robert's early classical and rock-n-roll background, as well as his time spent at Boston's Berklee College of Music where he studied jazz and popular music.
But don't let this throw you...First Portrait's sound is not "straight from the textbook." This guy takes classics such as Porter's "Just One Of Those Things" and the Gershwin's "But Not For Me" and transforms them into his own fresh sounds.
Robert displays a natural knack for the classics but even more provocative are his own cool and jazzy compositions like "Someone To Comfort e" and "You And I". The latter track is spiced up with a gracefully sassy female accompaniment. These...you gotta hear.

First Portrait is the debut CD release by New York singer and pianist Robert Mosci - a collection of 13 standard, classic pop and original tunes performed by Mosci and accompanied by some of New York's finest jazz musicians. The recording is divided into 2 "sides": A Classic View showcases Mosci's swinging vocals as he interprets standards by Gershwin, Porter, etc. in a small group setting. Another Side features Robert's smooth readings of some choice pop tunes as well as 4 Mosci originals, all with riveting solo work by the ensemble.
