One by One
by Robert Mosci

"When I describe Robert Mosci, several adjectives come to mind - creative, gifted, musically tenacious, loving, and yes, romantic. This recording is stunning and versatile from beginning to end.
Listen closely to "Straighten Up and Fly Right", one of Nat King Cole's earliest hits. Robert interprets it with grace and humor, complemented by a swinging solo from bassist Jeff Lopez. By contrast, "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" lends a Latin flavor with a haunting trumpet solo by Michael Morreale.
A consummate example of intuitive orchestration and fine writing yields "The Blessings of My Day", truly a blessing for all of us. An added dimension is the resonant vocal by Lori Velez, heard again in "I Say a Little Prayer", smoothly produced as a duet that will take you back in time while remaining contemporary.
Robert's piano and silky vocal interpretation charms in the romantic standard "When I Fall in Love". "There Will Never Be Another You" offers a swinging yet soulful vocal, and exuberant guitar by Bob DeVos. Rogers and Hart's " I Wish I Were In Love Again" is spiced appealingly with a Spike Jones - like wit, complete with sound effects.
"Daddy, Don't You Treat Me So Mean", fueled with a smoking groove by percussionist Ray Bruce, is an original composition that delivers. Contemporary lyrics chronicling the comedic stress of parenting set to an older blues/swing style gets it right. Robert's handling of Bill Evans' classic jazz standard "Waltz For Debbie" presents the more visceral and tender aspects of fatherhood as a young daughter's world is observed.
Robert's rich vocal pegs the fabled "Nature Boy", augmented by the melancholy trombone of Matt Haviland. "Learnin' the Blues" pairs Robert's saavy phrasing with an infectious bari sax solo by Erik Lawrence.
The session concludes with one of my favorite of Robert's originals, "You Came Along"; the arrangements as lush as the lyrics joyful.
Musicianship in this recording is first-chop. The players are among the best around: Bob Devos ~ guitar; Michael Morreale ~ trumpet, fluegelhorn; Erik Lawrence ~ saxophones; Matt Haviland ~ trombone; Ray Bruce ~ drums, percussion; Jeff Lopez ~ acoustic bass; Lori Velez ~ vocals. Robert's own economical piano sets the tone throughout.
The arrangements are delicious and masterful. This recording will surely be featured on John Moultrie's "A Sunday Kind of Love" on 1340 WALL radio, as well as on jazz, American popular standards, and other stations hip enough to pick up the musical thread. This recording has got to be part of your library. Ladies and Gentlemen - permit me to introduce "One By One" and one talented Robert Mosci!"
